Massachusetts officials announce 82 new coronavirus deaths as number of COVID-19 cases surpasses 90K, overall trends continue downward

State health officials on Thursday announced another 82 COVID-19 deaths, bringing the statewide total to 6,148.

Officials also confirmed another 1,114 cases of the virus, meaning there are now at least 90,084 across Massachusetts. That’s based on 11,533 new tests reported on Thursday.

There have now been 501,486 tests carried out by state and commercial labs.

The latest figures mark significant milestones in the spread of the virus and come a day after the death toll climbed to more than 6,000 in Massachusetts. Across the U.S., more than 95,000 people have now died.

Health officials have tweaked their reporting method to better track key metrics in the fight against the virus, and now indicate in their daily reports which data points are trending favorably, which will determine the pace of the reopening plan.

The data this week has so far shown a downward trend in COVID-19-related deaths, positive tests, the three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in the hospital and the number of hospitals using surge capacity. But Gov. Charlie Baker has alluded to ongoing fluctuations in the data — even doing so several times this week — which continue to prompt caution from officials in opening up the state too soon.

Baker unveiled his administration’s plan to reopen parts of the Massachusetts economy, beginning with the restart of some operations and activities at hospitals, in construction and manufacturing, as well as places of worship, that day.

In the first phase, retailers can resume work for curbside pickup; hair salons can take appointments; and some offices can open at limited capacity, according to the plan. Hospitals can resume certain “high-priority services” for high-risk patients, and some manufacturing and construction businesses can restart, provided they put in place workplace safety standards.
